This site originally as a series of QuickTime movies called The Unicorn With An Attitude that were created by Kimberly Keyes Stark in 1995 for two reasons. One was to teach her how to make QuickTime clips. The second reason was to prove to skeptical potential employers that she was (and still is) capable of doing more than low-paid clerical work. (These jobs are frequently given the euphimism "administrative" yet they still consist of tedious work where the boredom is only broken by overpaid managers--of both genders--who look down on administrative workers as subhumans who deserve to be yelled at, scolded at, and treated like children.)
The Unicorn With An Attitude movies were originally created without soundtracks and posted on various CompuServe forums and local BBS's throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area. When the World Wide Web came along, Kim decided to post the movies as animated gifs on her personal site. A few months later, she began to embed background music into the pages that had the animated gif movies on the advice of some of her fans. (Most of the music came from various MIDI sites and all of them were in the public domain.) The site began to win some attention and even some awards but Kim had bigger ambitions than the 5 MB limit of her personal server space.
In 2000 she moved The Unicorn With An Attitude movies to a larger server (complete with its own URL and a new name--Twisted Unicorn Productions) and the animated gif movies were converted back into QuickTime with musical soundtracks. In addition, the scope of the new Twisted Unicorn site expanded from simply housing The Unicorn With An Attitude QuickTime movies into an entertainment site that features other forms of parody (such as the JenniCam parody called the UniCam). Twisted Unicorn also included new features, such as The Website Hall of Infamy, an online message board, passages from this site's webmistress' personal journal, and outrageous soundbites.
In 2002 the site began to post Flash animations for the first time. As new technologies emerge this site will use them as long as they enhance the quality of this site.
